Registered Dental Assistant

Position Purpose

Working under the direction of the Dental Office Manager, the Registered Dental Assistant assists with oral surgeries and other procedures while preparing and arranging necessary tools and instruments for scheduled procedures as well as taking, processing and developing dental X-rays.

Reports to:  Dental Office Manager

Essential Functions

  • Take, process, and develop dental x-rays;
  • Comprehend and follow oral and written directions;
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
  • Work efficiently and accurately in a fast paced environment with multiple priorities;
  • Interface effectively in a team environment with agency staff and volunteers;
  • Handle crisis and stressful situations in an effective, calm and respectful manner;
  • Proficient in verbal and written use of English grammar;
  • Learn and use the EMR system in house, in addition to other general office computer programs;
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school, possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test;
  • Three to five years of experience providing chair side dental assistance; completion of a recognized curriculum for dental assistants may be substituted for the required experience;
  • Must have good knowledge of dental assistant procedures; principles and methods of sterilization, proper care and use of dental instruments, equipment, and materials.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Ability to:
    • interpret client files and dental charts;
    • effectively communicate with all levels of individuals;
    • relate to all types of individuals in a courteous non-judgmental and professional manner;
  • Bilingual/bicultural.

License(s) and Certification(s)

  • Dental Radiology License: Valid certificate of compliance issued by the California State Board of Dental Examiners indicating successful completion of an examination in radiation safety; or completion of an American Dental Association or California State Board of Dental Examiners certified course in principles of Radiation Safety;
  • Active and unrestricted Registered Dental Assistance License;
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross accredited BLS certification.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a clinical set and requires frequent times of sitting, standing and repetitive motion. Ability to lift up to 24 pounds. Job usually involves contact with patients or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens, is possible.  Access to patient protected health information may be required.
